Entry to an array of historic forts, Victorian mansions and pivotal battlefields around the state will be free on May 7.
The Texas Historical Commission is dropping admission fees to state historic sites that day to celebrate National Preservation Month and National Travel and Tourism Week.

“These unique sites illustrate the breadth of Texas history, and we encourage visitors to support the preservation of these special places,” Joseph Bell, deputy executive director of Historic Sites said in a press release. “Staff at our state historic sites are excited to invite visitors to spend the day exploring our sites.”

Participating sites include Kreische Brewery in LaGrange, where a German immigrant used spring water to start one of the first commercial breweries in Texas; Fort McKavett, a 150-year-old West Texas Fort that operated during the Texas Indian Wars; and the French Legation in Austin, a diplomatic outpost for the French charge d’affaires to the Republic of Texas.
