Plan your Outdoorsy Adventure

April, 2021

Imagine rolling down the road in your own adventure mobile, pulling over to check out a national park or detouring to visit an alluring little town on a whim. Now imagine doing that while towing a turquoise and white trailer named Davy Crocket, decked out in ‘50s style, or a shiny, bullet-shaped Airstream named Big Willie.

We scanned the listings on Outdoorsy, the largest RV rental marketplace on the planet, and found some of the most charming vehicles––all available for rental right here in Austin.

If these don’t make you want to pack your hammock and swimsuit and head out of town, you’re certain to find something that does among the 200,000-plus vehicles for rent on the website, which pairs RV owners with rigs sitting on their driveways with adventurers yearning to hit the trails.

Without further ado, we present you with nine notable rides, below. For more information, go to www.outdoorsy.com, or read the latest on the site’s Never Idle Journal.

Superfly ($159 per night, sleeps four). You’ll get looks when you pull up with this 13-foot, blue and white Happier Camper HC1 towable. It comes with a removable 5-gallon sink, table, camp stove, solar shower and stowable camp toilet, and the back door opens up completely. The owners will even tow her to a site in or around Austin for an added fee. Details at https://www.outdoorsy.com/rv-rental/austin_tx/2016_happier-camper_hc1_5660-listing?address=Austin%2C%20Texas%2C%20United%20States.

S’Morez the Subaru ($115 per night, sleeps five). Ever wonder what it’s like to sleep in one of those rooftop tents? Find out with this 2018 all-wheel drive Subaru Outback, outfitted with a Tepui Explorer Ayer 2 rooftop tent that sleeps two. (You also get ground tents and sleeping bags to sleep three more folks, plus a folding table, chair and camping stove.) The mesh panels unzip to let in the breeze, and you’ll love the view from treetop level. Details at https://www.outdoorsy.com/rv-rental/austin_tx/2018_flexihome_loyds-cabin_208108-listing?address=Austin%2C%20Texas%2C%20United%20States.

Tiny Cabin on Wheels ($259 per night, sleeps four). The interior of this wood-paneled 201 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter will make you feel like you’ve snuggled up in a cabin in the North Woods, right down to the wood-burning stove. There’s even a shower and kitchenette in this cozy little all-in-one rig. Details at https://www.outdoorsy.com/rv-rental/austin_tx/2019_mercedes-benz_sprinter_202789-listing?address=Austin%2C%20Texas%2C%20United%20States.

1984 Volkswagen Westfalia Vanagon ($185 per night, sleeps four). This 1984 campervan from Tin Can Travel doesn’t have air-conditioning, but it does have sweet vibes––and a tub of 8-track tapes (think Janis Joplin!) to jam to while you ramble down the road. Details at https://www.outdoorsy.com/rv-rental/austin_tx/1984_volkswagen_westfalia_51155-listing?address=Austin%2C%20Texas%2C%20United%20States.

Big Willie 1976 Airstream Excella 500 ($225 per night; sleeps four). Looking for a little luxury? Check out this 31-foot, remodeled 1976 Airstream trailer, outfitted with a full bar, a cushy queen bed, and a firepit upon request. It’s heated, it’s cooled, and it comes with everything you need to cook dinner and kick back. The owners will even set it up for you, or let you stay in the trailer’s home base in South Austin. Details at

https://www.outdoorsy.com/rv-rental/austin_tx/1976_airstream_excella_204879-listing?address=Austin%2C%20Texas%2C%20United%20States.

Gypsy Blue ($138 per night; sleeps two). Opt for this 2019 Dodge Ram Promaster 2500 if you want an easy-to-drive house on wheels complete with a queen-sized mattress, a portable propane grill, a mini fridge and sink. Just don’t plan on an in-house shower or toilet. This one comes with linens and kitchen supplies, and even a space heater in case you’re headed north. Details at

https://www.outdoorsy.com/rv-rental/austin_tx/2020_dodge-ram_promaster-2500_181699-listing?address=Austin%2C%20Texas%2C%20United%20States.

VanGoGoUSA ($150 per night; sleeps three). You’ll be arm wrestling for rights to sleep in the 6-foot bunk up top when you rent this 20-foot, 2018 Sportsmobile custom van decorated with Van Gogh-inspired art. (Don’t worry, the others can sleep in the pull-out couch bed.) Once you get to where you’re going, you can set up an awning and hang out outside. Comes with a microwave, sink, minifridge, hideaway porta-potty and swiveling captain’s chairs so everyone can gather ‘round the dinner table. Details at https://www.outdoorsy.com/rv-rental/austin_tx/2018_sportsmobile_custom-design_95746-listing?address=Austin%2C%20Texas%2C%20United%20States.

1984 Other Other ($25 per night; sleeps three). Don’t want to shell out the big bucks, and don’t mind roughing it a tad? “Choose the poor man’s camper,” screams the listing for this 7-foot, weighs-less-than-500-pounds-trailer. The best part? You can pull it with a regular car––or even a motorcycle, and it sleeps as many kids as you can stuff inside. A kerosene stove, lantern and a few folding chairs are part of the deal. Details at https://www.outdoorsy.com/rv-rental/austin_tx/1984_other_other_174053-listing. A regular car with a hitch is all you need––this trailer can even be pulled by a motorcycle.

The Davy Crockett ($105 per night, sleeps three). Sleeping in this camper will send you back to the 1950s, from the checkered flooring to the birch paneling. You’ll sleep in a queen-sized bed and belly up to a dinette table that turns into a twin bed for dinner, and it comes with a fridge, TV, microwave, bathroom and more. Details at https://www.outdoorsy.com/rv-rental/austin_tx/2020_riverside-rv_retro_174399-listing.
