Sometimes, old school is better.
When four college students squirmed their way into a rocky crevice under a limestone bridge north of San Antonio in 1960, they used nothing but handheld lanterns to explore the dim passages.
Starting March 1, Natural Bridge Caverns will add a new Lantern Tour of Discovery Cavern to its lineup. Participants will walk on paved paths with handrails, and will learn about those original cavers, who on their fourth expedition uncovered what eventually became known as the largest cavern in Texas. The current mapped length of the cave is 4.18 miles, with 1.13 miles discovered since 2019.
The new lantern tour joins a lineup that includes a basic Discovery Tour, a Hidden Wonders Tour, Adventure Tours, and special events like yoga in the caves. It honors one of those college students, Orion Knox, who died last year.
