A guide to summer fun in Gruene, Texas

There is something that is just so mesmerizing about Gruene, Texas.

Maybe it’s the way that, once you enter the 25-acre historic district, you instantly feel transported to another time, despite the fact that you’re just an hour from Austin.

Maybe it’s the way the whole community seems to revolve around nature, from the wide-reaching shade trees that dapple the square in green to the cool blue river waters bordering the historic district that sits upstream from New Braunfels.

Or maybe it’s the way that music seems to be flowing from every corner, whether you’re listening to a band at the iconic Gruene Hall or playing your favorite tunes on a waterproof speaker while floating the river.

Whatever the reason, little Gruene makes an indelible mark on its visitors. And no time does it shimmer and shine more brightly than in the summer, when its cool breezes and even cooler waters serve as a siren’s song on Texas’ 100-degree days.

If you’re looking for a fun day trip or weekend getaway this summer, here’s your guide to summer fun in Gruene, Texas.

Stay and play at Petit Cowboy

I love any excuse to visit Gruene, so I was elated to receive an invitation to check out Petit Cowboy, a recently reopened and renovated riverside property by French Cowboys hospitality brand that was formerly known as Heidelberg Lodges.

Located directly on the banks of the Comal River, the property was immediately inviting and relaxing thanks to its two glittering pools, colorful umbrella shades and swaying riverside swings. The best part, though, was the direct river access ideal for travelers craving a cool plunge into its waters.

Start your morning with a coffee inside your newly and beautifully renovated cabin — rates start at $129 and there are six room types available — then head out for a game of pickleball at the on-site court. Later, go for a swim, then grab a cocktail, snack or treat at the clubhouse before heading to the Gruene square, which is minutes away, for a night on the town.

As with all of its projects, the renovations to the beloved property were executed thoughtfully and carefully by the French Cowboys, who now have several lodging sites in the area.

Find your fit at Gruene Hat Company

I’m always amazed by how much is packed into Gruene’s 25-acre historic district, and no place encapsulates that small-but-mighty vibe more than the Gruene Hat Company. Located inside of H.D. Gruene’s original bank vault, the shop occupies less than 250 square feet but is, er, brimming with hats of all shapes, sizes, and textures; in fact, there’s a five-to-one hat-to-square-foot ratio here. Stop by to try on a few styles — hats come in felt, straw, hemp and palm leaf — or pick up accessories such as hat bands, gloves, wallets, scarves, and more.

Putter around at Gruene Mini Golf

One of my favorite new finds during our recent trip to Gruene was Gruene Mini Golf, which essentially took all of the iconic landmarks in town and shrank them down, then served them up as a one-of-a-kind miniature golf course. Putt your way through the Gruene Water Tower, take a spin past Gruene Hall, and even sing a note or two as you approach the giant guitar hole. It’s an ideal outing for families, friends, and date nights alike.

See a show at Gruene Hall

Built in 1878, Gruene Hall is the state’s oldest continually operating dancehall and the heartbeat of this little town. Whether you’re two-stepping across its wooden floorboards or enjoying a beer at one of its outdoor picnic tables, the dancehall is a Texas icon that has hosted some of the greatest musicians of our time, including George Strait, Kacey Musgraves, Gary Clark Jr., and many more. While evening shows are ticketed, there is live music every day and many of the shows are free and family friendly.

Go for a float with Rockin’ R River Outfitters

Floating the Guadalupe and Comal Rivers is a Texas rite of passage, and these days, coordinating a tubing trip is easier than ever. Since 1979, Rockin’ R River Outfitters has been hosting tubing, rafting and kayaking trips in Gruene and the surrounding areas. It now boasts five locations — including one in downtown Gruene — where you can park, take a shuttle to your entry point, and float to your car. Simply determine the location, the intensity level, and the length you want, then book your float online.

Extend your stay at Hacienda del Río

Another beautifully renovated property offered by the French Cowboys hospitality brand, Hacienda Del Rio is nestled along the Guadalupe River and offers a modern take on Hill Country hospitality thanks to its thoughtfully designed rooms and casitas. Enjoy a coffee or cocktail at the Del Sol clubhouse, take a swim in the motel-style pool, float the adjacent Guadalupe River, or head down the street to explore the Gruene Historic District.
